ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- St. Johns IceCaps defenceman Ben Chiarots night went from despair to elation on Saturday, as his team beat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2 in overtime in American Hockey League action. Chiarot found himself on the end of a wide open puck just outside the slot with the third period winding down, but when he went to connect with the shot his stick exploded. Chiarot got a chance to redeem himself when he set up the game winner with 24.9 seconds left in overtime. "To keep this streak going, it feels great," he said, referring to the last nine games in which St. Johns has walked away with at least a point. "The boys are really excited." Adam Lowry scored the overtime winner, on a partial breakaway with a forehand-to-backhand move before hitting the backhand shot high, with 24.9 seconds left in the extra frame. Eric ODell and Andrew Gordon also scored for St. Johns (36-19-4). Scooter Vaughan and Aaron Ness scored the Sound Tigers (26-27-6). The teams combined for 48 penalty minutes, which shaped the way the game played out. "Not everyone gets out (to play)," Chiarot said. "Penalty killers dont usually play on the power play (and vice-versa). Depending on which way the calls are going, guys can get a little stuff on the bench. It seemed to even itself out in the end and the guys stayed in it." Bridgeport opened the scoring 7:00 into the game through Vaughan, who smashed a one-time slapshot in from the point on the power play. ODell tied the game for the IceCaps at the 12:48 mark of the first, finding a loose puck in front after Jason Jaffray had wrapped around the net. Ness added a short-handed goal for the Sound Tigers at the 13:36 mark of the first, gaining the zone and sniping high blocker with a wrist shot from the slot. The IceCaps tied the game on a power-play goal from Gordon, who wired a slapshot from the point high blocker at the 5:36 mark of the second period. Gordons goal was the turning point of the game, according to IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge. "Our guys did a good job realizing it when we were down one goal," McCambridge said. "Andrew Gordons goal was a real big one for us to build some momentum. You have to give their goaltender credit, he was excellent at fighting through traffic." IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson made 14 saves. Kevin Poulin stopped 33 shots for the Sound Tigers. Kobe Bryant Shoes From China . This is now a question at the Australian Open.Social media erupted overnight with reaction to Eugenie Bouchard being asked by an on-court interviewer to give us a twirl and show off her tennis dress after winning her second-round match. Some called the request by a male presenter sexist. Many on Twitter wondered if a man would be asked to twirl after winning a match.Serena Williams suspects not.I wouldnt ask Rafa or Roger to twirl, Williams said Thursday, referring to Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.Williams was asked to twirl, too, by the same presenter a day earlier.I didnt really want to twirl because I was just like, you know, I dont need all the extra attention, said the No. 1-ranked player who is aiming to win her 19th Grand Slam singles title. She preferred not to enter the debate of whether the request was sexist.Life is far too short to focus on that, she said. Whether I twirl or not, its not the end of the world.Anyway, Williams said she always twirls. After winning matches, she walks back to court and twirls with a wave to thank the crowd. Shes taking dance class, too.I twirl all the time in dance class, she said. I really have to work on my spotting. My coach tells me to whip my head around. On Wednesday, Bouchard told her post-match news conference the twirl request was very unexpected.I dont know, an old guy asking you to twirl. Itt was funny, said Bouchard.ddddddddddddy Jocelyn Gecker -- http://twitter.com/jgecker___THE WILLIAMS DOUBLES MYSTERY: Venus and Serena Williams prefer not to say why they pulled out of the doubles competition at the Australian Open.According to the rules you dont have to give a reason. I think well stick with that, Venus said Thursday after winning her second-round singles match. The Williams sisters have won 13 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including four at the Australian Open. They were scheduled to play their first-round match Wednesday but withdrew before it started without explaining why.The mystery continued Thursday, with Venus saying she was allowed to be coy, which naturally prompted a string of questions. Was it the heat?It was warm, the 34-year-old American said. I don think it was as warm as it could have been. But, no, that wasnt it.Was there a medical reason? Were doctors consulted? No further questions on that, Venus said. I object. Sustained. Thank you.But the questions continued at Serenas post-match news conference.I dont think we have to give a reason, reiterated Serena, who also advanced to the third round. I think Venus answered that already.By Jocelyn Gecker -- http://twitter.com/jgecker___Australian Open Scene follows tennis Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne as seen by journalists from The Associated Press.
